(Also to be clear I do not actually think anyone is in the pocket of Big Ink. I just think they all have terrible taste for not recommending the Iopenna as the obviously best starter pen.)

That...THING... makes me uncomfortable. The floppiness is, uh, disturbing.

I agree that every time I see a post on that other site about someone wanting a beginner pen, everyone immediately suggests the LAMY, which I really do not care for. Pilot is great, but I'd always suggest trying the Varsity or Kakuno to see if you even jive with fountain pens before you spend any more money. Or the Platinum Preppy. So many better lesser investments than LAMO.

I don't know if I have a stupid hand or what but the Safari is just a mystifying first pen to me. Adjusting from a ballpoint/roller is already enough of a big change without also having to deal with its triangle grip.

I agree on the Kakuno, which has a much less pronounced version of the Safari grip, and for real think the Kaweco Sport is a pretty good first pen for someone.

Other than the Iopenna obviously, although I guess if you start with the Iopenna then everything else is going to be kind of a disappointment. It's like how the BENU Parrot was one of my first pens and I was like WOW THIS IS AWESOME and then was disappointed to find out most pens are just pen-shaped.

I love the Kaweco Sports and have many colors (plastic only). My actual first real fountain pen was in elementary school when all the kids were jumping on the Sheaffer NoNonsense train and these pens are still my all-time favorite. Easy to fill, easy to use, a nib like butter! What's not to love?

The reason to use a fountain pen is to minimize one’s contribution to the landfill crisis and glass ink bottles are recyclable and way cooler than a bunch of used ballpoints or international short cartridges therefore the best starter pen is the Pelikan Souvreign line. Take your pick.

I firmly believe that starter fountain pens should use standard international cartridges. A big part of the draw to fountain pens is the different inks, after all!

Also - does the floppy part of the pen attract lint? Something about it just screams to me that it could never be kept clean

Surprisingly it's not that bad. I leave mine on my desk 24/7 in a room that generates a fair amount of dust and it's not nearly the lint magnet I thought it would be.
